Course Description

This course introduces students to software application development concepts and principles by examining real world scenarios from a holistic perspective in a hands-on learning environment. Students will learn about the application development life cycle, the fundamentals of computer programming, the .NET framework, how to develop front-end applications, the differences between Web, mobile, and desktop applications. Plus, students will receive an introduction to cloud services like Web servers and relational database management systems.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Identify the appropriate method for handling repetition.
  • Set up data-binding on server-side controls.
  • Create a method for writing to an XML data file.
  • Modify an application to use authentication and authorization.
  • Validate that an application has been successfully published for public consumption.
  • Deduce application errors using debugging.
  • Solve application exception errors using try, catch, and finally.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Given an application specification which requires a repetitive process to occur, student must implement the correct method for handling repetition into their application.
  • Given a DataSet and an application specification which specifies which data fields should be bound to which server controls, student will bind the correct controls to the specified data using Data-Binding.
  • Given and pre-configured XML file and an application specification which requires that form data be written to an XML file, student will create a method for successfully writing to the specified XML data file.
  • Given an application specification which requires the implementation of authentication and authorization, student will configure an application to use authentication and authorization according to specification.
  • Given a Web application and a Web server's FTP address, student will be able to successfully connect to and publish the Web application to the specified Web server.
  • Given a Web/Mobile application which will not compile successfully, student will debug the Web/Mobile application in order to successfully locate and fix the error(s) which are preventing it from compiling successfully.
  • Given an application specification which requires handling network requests which may or may not be reliable, student will successfully handle potential application exception errors using try, catch, and finally.

Instructor's Notes to Students:

As you can see by the assignments listed above, you have one assignment that you must complete for each lesson we cover in your textbook. There is also a Quiz you will need to complete for each Lesson.

You can download the Data Files needed for your lessons by going to the Resources link. Once you are on the Resources page, follow the instructions for downloading the Data Files.

To submit your End of Chapter assignments for grading, you will need to "publish" your file(s) to the CIS Web server using your IDE of choice and then email me a hyperlink to the home page for the assignment..

If you run into problems while working on an assignment, then email me your URL and I will give you hints or tips to lead you to a successful completion of the assignment. Since ASP.NET coding occurs on the server-side, when needed, I will request you zip your assignment folder and email it to me as an attachment.

All assignments in their final form, must be submitted by their due date. Assignments submitted within one week after their due date will be marked down 10%, submissions after one week of their due date will be marked down 20%.

Assignments which are received on-time and have no errors will receive 100 points. If there are errors and the assignment was submitted on-time you will be given a score based on the site with errors and then given a chance to increase your score by correcting the errors and re-submitting the assignment URL to your instructor.

Students who fail to submit three or more consecutive assignments may be dropped from this course by your instructor.

Late Assignments

No Extensions

All assignments must be completed by 11:59 P.M. on the due date listed for the assignment under the Due Date column in the Course Schedule section of the Syllabus. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED without extenuating circumstances. “I had to work,” “I was sick,” or “I didn’t understand the instructions” are NOT extenuating circumstances. Hospitalization or death of an immediate family member are, but will require supporting evidence. This does not exempt you from completing any assignment which MUST be submitted by the last day of the class.

Note: Due Dates for all Assignments, Exams and/or Quizzes are listed in the Syllabus for this class.

Instructor's Regular Effective Contact Policy

For quickest response to questions or problems regarding this course, students should always send me an email using the format specified in the CIS EMAIL POLICY to the email address listed in the instructor box at the top of the Syllabus.

When emailing me during my stated online office hours, which can be found by clicking on the “Hours” link within the Instructor's box of this course, I will usually respond within the same day - depending on my student case load for that particular day. Students are always responded to on a first come first served basis.

When emailing me outside of my posted office hours, when posting to a discussion thread, or when submitting an assignment, students can expect that they will receive an appropriate response, when required, within 48 hours of the post or submission (Monday thru Thursday at 5:00 P.M.). Emails received after Thursday at 5:00 P.M. will be responded to on the following Monday.

To schedule a face-to-face meeting during the posted face-to-face office hours or to request synchronous contact via: virtual office, by telephone, or IM (Instant Messaging); please email your request so that we can schedule a mutually convenient meeting time.

From time to time, as it is deemed necessary, contact will be initiated with you, individually or jointly, via: email, Canvas Announcements, or Discussion Board posts to help keep you informed and up-to-date regarding your progress or status in this course. Be sure that you read all Announcements I post on Canvas and check your MSJC email on a daily basis. Please click "Reply" when responding to an email I send you so that my email message is included in your email response. That way I can easily keep track of what our discussion thread pertains to.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Stealing Policies (Academic Integrity)

  • Any student who plagiarizes the work of any other person will be given a zero on any and all assignments where plagiarism has been utilized.
  • Any student caught cheating on a quiz or final exam will receive a zero for quiz or final exam.
  • Any student caught removing items from the classroom including but not limited to: lab materials and tools, without authorization, will be dropped from the course and given an automatic "F".

Learning Environment

All students are entitled to an environment that encourages learning. If a student behaves in a manner that negatively affects other class members, he or she is guilty of disruptive behavior. Such behavior will be addressed in a manner consistent with school policy.

In a face-to-face class students should turn off cell phones and refrain from speaking when others are already talking.

In an online class students should follow the rules of netiquette when posting to discussion forums or communicating via Canvas Messaging.

  1. Lab/tutor schedules and access can be found by clicking on the Help button "?" in Canvas.
