Getting Started
NOTE: For best results complete the steps in
the order listed.
- Read the Start Here page to learn how to successfully complete this class (you'll find a link to it in the Course menu).
- Read the Syllabus page to learn when assignments are due (you'll find a link to it in the Course menu).
- Download and extract the Data Files
you will be using throughout this course (click on the How to
Download & Extract Data Files link below).
- Learn how to access the Microsoft Visual Studio
application or other integrated development environment (IDE) for coding and ideally also
for publishing assignments.
- Learn how to use FTP to get
connected to the Student Web server for publishing your
assignments in later weeks (see Getting Started Assignment overview
below).
- Learn how to email your instructor the correct URL for all of your completed assignments (see What URL to Use for Viewing Your Completed Assignments overview below).
- Textbook: Since CSIS 115A is a pre-requisite for this class you should
already have your textbook. If you do not have the textbook listed
in the textbook box at the top of the Syllabus, order it immediately, you will need it to complete
the Tutorial 8 Review Assignment.
Be sure you take the time to read and fully understand each of the
Getting Started lessons listed below. Everything MUST be
completed before the beginning of Week 2. Please email me if you have any questions at all!
How to Download &
Extract Data Files In order to complete the step-by-step tutorials in your textbook and the Review Assignments you will be publishing for grading, you must first download the student Data Files from the Student Web server and extract them into a My Web Sites folder inside of your My Documents folder. This tutorial will explain how to complete the necessary steps.
How to Access and Use the Remote Desktop System (RDS) This document will provide you with instructions on how to locate and log into the new Remote Desktop System (RDS) that MSJC is making available to students both in the classroom and over the Internet. The reason for using the RDS in this course is to have easy access to Microsoft's Visual Studio authoring tool which you will need to complete your assignments.
If you won't be using the RDS, meaning you will be using Visual Studio or another integrated development environment (IDE) on your own PC, MAC, Linux, Unix device you do
not need to read this tutorial.
Visual Studio Basics This tutorial will teach you everything you need to know to use Visual Studio for completing the weekly Tutorial and Review Assignments you will be completing throughout this class. It explains how to download the free version of Visual Studio, how to connect to the Student Web server and publish an HTML page to your student Web site folder. It also explains how to edit CSS using Visual Studio and briefly covers the key features of Intellisense which can help you code more quickly, more efficiently, and with fewer coding errors.
If you won't be completing your assignments using Visual Studio you
do not need to read this tutorial.
What URL to Use for Viewing Your Completed Assignments? In this class one of the most important tasks you will need to learn is how to review your assignments once you have published them to the Student Web server. This tutorial will tell you everything you need to know about URLs in order to be able to view your assignments in a Web browsers to verify they are working correctly.
Getting Started Assignment This tutorial will teach you everything you need to know to complete the Getting Started assignment including publishing your assignment files to the Student Web server using the file transfer protocol (FTP).
The FTP server connection information and tutorials that teach how to configure Visual Studio,
Dreamweaver, Visual Studio, to connect and publish your local files to the Student Web server using FTP.

You do not need to publish the completed tutorial, but the knowledge you learn from completing the tutorial will be very beneficial in helping you to complete the Review Assignment which you will publish for grading.
